Utopia High School Tennis Team Wins Two State Championships

The Utopia High School Tennis scored gold bring home two state champion trophies and medals in the 1A UIL State Tennis Tournament.  Kinsley Cox and Meagan Cole defeated their district rivals Kayleigh Griffin and Kennedy Thompson from Knippa 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 to bring home the championship.

The third time was indeed a charm for junior Luke Leavelle as brings home the gold in his third trip to the state individual tennis finals after bringing home 2nd place medals his freshman year and sophomore years. Luke defeated Lenorah Grady of of Chapman-Sims High School 6-2, 3-6,6-3. L

When asked about him winning the championship Luke stated that “It felt great to win, especially after getting 2nd two years in a row. My Favorite part of the experience was getting rewarded with my medal after i won and seeing Coach Keeney as happy as me. My goal next year is to win again, especially since it will be my senior year.”

Luke’s younger brother also was a state qualifier but bowed out in the first round (quarterfinals0 to Colt Lawrence of Rising Star 6-0, 6-3.

Coach Stacey Keeney praised his athletes stating that “The time and dedication the young boys and girls put into getting better , paid off with bringing home 2 State Championships. They brought the “Gold” back for Utopia and all the support they have received through the tennis season.”

“So proud of the kiddos for keeping mentally focused and keeping to the game plan. Setting our goals for the next year, the kiddos said they are going back to repeat as State Champs and would like for their teammates to bring home another gold in another division.”
